The Basics of Backgammon Strategies – Part 2
Tuesday, 15. September 2026
As we dicussed in the last article, Backgammon is a casino game of ability and good luck. The goal is to shift your pieces carefully around the board to your inner board and at the same time your opposition shifts their pieces toward their home board in the opposite direction. With opposing player pieces heading in opposite directions there is bound to be conflict and the need for particular strategies at particular times. Here are the 2 final Backgammon strategies to round out your game.
The Priming Game Tactic
If the purpose of the blocking plan is to slow down the opponent to shift their checkers, the Priming Game strategy is to absolutely barricade any activity of the opponent by creating a prime – ideally 6 points in a row. The opponent’s pieces will either get hit, or result a battered position if she ever tries to leave the wall. The trap of the prime can be established anyplace between point two and point eleven in your half of the board. Once you have successfully constructed the prime to prevent the movement of the competitor, the opponent does not even get a chance to roll the dice, and you move your chips and toss the dice yet again. You’ll win the game for sure.
The Back Game Tactic
The goals of the Back Game tactic and the Blocking Game technique are similar – to hurt your competitor’s positions in hope to better your chances of winning, but the Back Game plan uses different techniques to achieve that. The Back Game tactic is generally used when you’re far behind your competitor. To play Backgammon with this technique, you need to control two or more points in table, and to hit a blot (a single piece) late in the game. This plan is more complex than others to play in Backgammon because it needs careful movement of your chips and how the pieces are relocated is partially the outcome of the dice toss.
