The Essential Basics of Backgammon Tactics – Part 2
Wednesday, 5. August 2026
As we dicussed in the last article, Backgammon is a game of talent and luck. The goal is to move your pieces safely around the game board to your inside board and at the same time your opposition moves their pieces toward their inner board in the opposite direction. With opposing player pieces moving in opposite directions there is bound to be conflict and the need for particular strategies at particular instances. Here are the last 2 Backgammon tactics to finish off your game.
The Priming Game Strategy
If the purpose of the blocking plan is to slow down the opponent to move their chips, the Priming Game strategy is to completely block any movement of the opponent by assembling a prime – ideally 6 points in a row. The competitor’s pieces will either get hit, or end up in a battered position if he/she at all attempts to escape the wall. The trap of the prime can be setup anyplace between point two and point eleven in your game board. Once you’ve successfully assembled the prime to block the movement of your competitor, the opponent doesn’t even get to toss the dice, and you move your checkers and toss the dice again. You will be a winner for sure.
The Back Game Plan
The aims of the Back Game plan and the Blocking Game tactic are very similar – to hurt your competitor’s positions hoping to better your odds of succeeding, however the Back Game technique relies on alternate techniques to do that. The Back Game strategy is often utilized when you are far behind your competitor. To participate in Backgammon with this technique, you have to hold two or more points in table, and to hit a blot late in the game. This tactic is more challenging than others to employ in Backgammon seeing as it requires careful movement of your pieces and how the pieces are relocated is partially the result of the dice roll.
