The Essential Basics of Backgammon Strategies – Part 2
Tuesday, 9. September 2025
As we have dicussed in the previous article, Backgammon is a casino game of skill and luck. The aim is to shift your chips safely around the game board to your inner board and at the same time your opponent moves their chips toward their inner board in the opposite direction. With opposing player pieces heading in opposing directions there is bound to be conflict and the need for particular tactics at specific times. Here are the 2 final Backgammon strategies to finish off your game.
The Priming Game Plan
If the purpose of the blocking plan is to hamper the opponents ability to move her pieces, the Priming Game plan is to completely stop any activity of the opponent by creating a prime – ideally 6 points in a row. The opponent’s pieces will either get bumped, or result a damaged position if he/she at all attempts to escape the wall. The ambush of the prime can be setup anyplace between point 2 and point 11 in your board. Once you’ve successfully constructed the prime to stop the movement of the opponent, your opponent does not even get to roll the dice, and you move your pieces and toss the dice again. You’ll win the game for sure.
The Back Game Tactic
The aims of the Back Game strategy and the Blocking Game strategy are very similar – to harm your opponent’s positions with hope to better your chances of succeeding, however the Back Game plan uses seperate tactics to achieve that. The Back Game plan is generally used when you’re far behind your competitor. To participate in Backgammon with this strategy, you need to control two or more points in table, and to hit a blot (a single checker) late in the game. This tactic is more complex than others to use in Backgammon seeing as it requires careful movement of your checkers and how the pieces are relocated is partially the result of the dice toss.
