Backgammon – Three Main Schemes

In exceptionally simple terms, there are three fundamental plans employed. You must be able to hop between game plans quickly as the course of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This is composed of creating a 6-thick wall of checkers, or at a minimum as deep as you are able to achieve, to lock in your competitor’s pieces that are located on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most suitable tactic at the begining of the game. You can build the wall anywhere between your 11-point and your two-point and then shuffle it into your home board as the match continues.

The Blitz

This is composed of closing your home board as fast as possible while keeping your opponent on the bar. For example, if your competitor rolls an early 2 and shifts one piece from your one-point to your three-point and you then roll a five-five, you will be able to play 6/1 6/1 eight/three 8/3. Your competitor is then in serious calamity taking into account that they have two checkers on the bar and you have closed half your inside board!

The Backgame

This strategy is where you have 2 or higher anchors in your competitor’s home board. (An anchor spot is a point consisting of at a minimum 2 of your checkers.) It must be employed when you are decidedly behind as this action much improves your chances. The best areas for anchors are towards your competitor’s smaller points and also on adjoining points or with a single point in between. Timing is crucial for an effective backgame: after all, there’s no point having 2 nice anchors and a solid wall in your own home board if you are then required to dismantle this right away, while your challenger is moving their pieces home, owing to the fact that you do not have any other additional checkers to shift! In this situation, it is better to have pieces on the bar so that you can preserve your position up until your competitor gives you an opportunity to hit, so it may be an excellent idea to attempt and get your opponent to hit them in this case!
